Job Purpose
The Wash Plant Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring and maintaining the wash plant equipment used in the processing and cleaning of materials such as aggregates, sand, gravel or recycled materials. The role ensures efficient plant performance, product quality and compliance with health, safety and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
Operate and control wash plant machinery and associated equipment safely and efficiently.
Monitor plant performance and adjust controls to maintain optimal production levels.
Conduct routine inspections of plant equipment including pumps, screens, conveyors and crushers.
Identify and report mechanical faults or abnormalities to maintenance teams.
Perform basic maintenance tasks and assist with repairs where required.
Ensure consistent product quality by monitoring material flow, moisture content and grading.
Maintain accurate production records and operational logs.
Ensure housekeeping standards are maintained around the plant area.
Follow site health, safety, and environmental procedures always.
Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings and operational meetings.
Assist with plant start-up and shutdown procedures.
Skills and Competencies
Ability to operate heavy plant and industrial processing equipment
Good mechanical awareness and fault-finding ability
Understanding of material processing and screening operations
Strong attention to safety and compliance procedures
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Good communication skills
Problem-solving and decision-making ability
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
Previous experience operating wash plants, processing plants or similar industrial equipment
Knowledge of health and safety practices in industrial environments
Basic mechanical knowledge
Desirable
Experience in quarrying, mining, aggregates or recycling industries
Relevant plant operation certifications or licenses
First Aid or health and safety training
Working Conditions
Outdoor working environment in quarry, mining, or industrial sites
Exposure to dust, noise, and varying weather conditions
Shift work may be required
Use of PPE including helmet, safety boots, eye protection and hearing protection
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk and climb stairs or ladders for extended periods
Ability to lift moderate loads when required
Good awareness of surroundings in a heavy machinery environment
